The Scottish Government has defended the UK’s decision to leave the EU, branding Brexit’s supporters as “noisy and nasty”.
In response to Labour MP Angela Smith’s criticism of the new proposals agreed by UK Prime Minister Theresa May, a spokesperson said: “The SNP was clear on Brexit before the referendum, and will remain clear in supporting the need for the UK to leave the EU.
“While a majority of Labour MPs voted for the result of the referendum, some Labour members have been loud and unpleasant in their rhetoric, especially on the airwaves, about the government’s position.”
The spokesperson added that the UK’s new plan was “worse than the status quo”.
“It would mean the UK having no say on laws made in the EU and taking control of its own trade policy, both of which are deeply unpopular with the British people.”
Earlier this month, Smith had said that May’s “no deal” plans had shifted and were “absolutely the worst of all worlds”.
“That was why I couldn’t support the Prime Minister in the recent confidence vote,” she said. “I think it is a hard place for the Prime Minister to be in.”
The UK is set to leave the EU at the end of March, with a transition period due to start on 31 December.//
